SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Create Sustainable Neighbourhoods

Regenerating Places through Ecological Consciousness

What constitutes “a place”? The answer to the question would hardly be confined to any architectural style, spatial scale, functional use or a pre-determined blanket design solutions. Arguably, places are seldom made; more often, they are regenerated – a process which re-capitalizes on the man-made and natural assets that are unique to each place. Regeneration re-connects key stakeholders, allowing them to share and align aspirations, while striving to restore balance in social, cultural and / or ecological terms.

One of the latest SDSG projects exemplifies this vision of regenerating place. As commissioned by HKGBC, RLP has collaborated with ARUP to conduct the consultancy study to formulate a new rating tool with aim to promote urban sustainability at neighourhood level. The new rating tool, BEAM Plus Neighbourhood will be launched by HKGBC in December 2016. It aims to apply sustainability principles at the early or inception stage of a project with emphasis on community engagement, placemaking, sustainable living, ecology and outdoor environmental quality.
