ARCHITECTURE

TODTOWN, Shanghai, China

The project team had to resolve a complex range of needs and challenges to create this well-connected, mixed-use “mini city”. Located above a local transport interchange, it connects existing communities and transportation links with an expanded rail infrastructure and new retail, office, hotel and residential developments over the 20+ hectare site.

A luxury retail mall forms the centerpiece of the design, conceived as two linking hands, and spans the site to join residential districts to the north and south of the existing subway station. The mall is made up of five interlinked retail floors above the transport interchange, with deep atria providing natural lighting across the internal spaces. A large landscaped garden is located on the roof level and is surrounded by high-end restaurants and coffee shops. New pedestrian routes run from ground level through the mall which, coupled with a new support road running through the site, seamlessly links all of the development's constituent parts together.

The commercial building is situated to the southeast of the mall and residential elements are organized into three rows; four pairs of 40-storey towers to the southeast form the core residential component, along with three 12-storey midrise blocks and five six-storey luxury townhouse blocks.
