ARCHITECTURE

The ISF Academy, Hong Kong

The Independent Schools Foundation’s new campus, serving 1,800 primary and secondary school children, is located at Pok Fu Lam next to the Cyberport development on Hong Kong Island.

The 1.3-hectare campus contains two four-storey teaching blocks which accommodate the primary and secondary schools. The blocks are linked by a two-storey communal podium housing a canteen and administrative offices. There are no boundaries between the two structures, yet they are architecturally differentiated with circular forms for the primary block and rectilinear ones for the secondary block to encourage interaction between the younger and older students. The design of the layout format and visual symbols – from circular to orthogonal – references the growth of children. The campus also includes a multi-purpose gymnasium which can be used for assembly and indoor activities, a large open playground, conference rooms, function rooms and a library.
