ARCHITECTURE

Ko Shan Theatre New Wing, Hong Kong

The project aimed to extend the existing park with minimum impact on its environment, while enhancing its identity as Hong Kong’s hub for Cantonese opera. Designed for barrier-free universal accessibility and targeting BEAM Plus gold certification, the annex is comprised of a 600-seat theatre with fly-tower facilities, function rooms, retail stores, a tea house and an exhibition hall.

The terraced building, close to the park’s western slope, includes gardens on various roof levels, improving the visual impact. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium provides a classical ambience that is rare in Hong Kong. The double-storey entrance foyer wraps around the auditorium, providing a comfortable circulation space with a full-height low-E double-glazed external wall that welcomes natural daylight and the exterior park view into the building. Designers also used sun-shading slats in warm timber tones to further blend the building into the park environment.
